Ben studied directing, acting and screen writing at New York University. In 1998 he was the first Australian director to be awarded a Clio for direction and in 1999 he appeared in time magazine alongside other emerging creative’s in Australia.
He has since been recognised at every major international advertising awards festival. His AICP award for “international excellence” saw Ben’s work being permanently housed in the museum of modern art, New York.
Locally, he has been nominated three years running at the Australian Directors Guild Awards in the TV commercial category.
Social causes have long been a focus of Ben’s documentary style work.
In 2009 he was the recipient of the Directors Guild Grass award for highlighting environmental causes in his work – which include TV campaigns for the climate institute of Australia, earth hour and the federal government’s carbon tax campaign in 2012.
He is also the co-founder of the Rozelle Protocol – an initiative that offsets carbon emissions from TV commercial production in Australia.
Ben has also written and directed several short films, documentary shorts and music clips. His 2007 short film ‘Paul’s dream’, based on a short story by Stephen King, was invited to screen at the Edinburgh, Clermont-Ferrand, L.A. Shorts and Sao Paulo film festivals.
Ben is also an award winning photographer with three solo exhibitions to date.
His Redfern, I Love You exhibition of 2013 followed on from the highly successful Short Stories project, from which a definitive collection of his street-photography was published.
His photographs have been awarded at the international photography awards in New York and also recognised at Spider Awards for photojournalism in London.
Most recently, he was a finalist in the 2013 Australian National Photographic Portrait prize.
